The Australian College of Environmental Studies (#21740) was established in 1999 to educate the public about the health hazards in the built environment. In 2005, it became the first and only college in Australia to deliver nationally accredited training in Building Biology and Feng Shui.

CEO and Founder- Nicole Bijlsma

ND, BHScAc(HONS), Grad Dip OHS, Dip Building Biology, IICRC Water Damage and Applied Microbial Remediation Technician, PhD candidate

As a small child Nicole Bijlsma was drawn towards all things environmental. Her mother retells stories of a young Nicole covering her face with a tea towel as an act of defiance against the air pollution in the city of Melbourne. Perhaps the defining moment however and ultimate inspiration for the college came from the pages of a children's book - Dr Seuss fortelling of a world devoid of trees due to human greed. The seed was sown and later in life Nicole continued her passion for the environment and its impact on human health first graduating as a naturopath, then acupuncture (including formal training in China), feng shui, mould, occupational health and safety and ultimately building biology. Nicole is a woman of passion and her passion lies in environmental medicine. She first became involved in environmental medicine as a result of two events in her life; firstly experiencing ten miscarriages after moving into her first home from what she now believes to be exposure to a high AC magnetic field (from the meter panel) and traffic related air pollutants; and secondly, when she began to notice the extent to which the environment was causing illness in many of her patients.

Nicole is an accomplished naturopath, acupuncturist, building biologist, writer and author who lectures on health hazards in the built environment. Apart from an Honours degree in Acupuncture, she completed further training in Guangzhou TCM hospital (China) and naturopathic qualifications in the early 1990s and has extensive experience lecturing in Traditional Chinese Medicine, naturopathic philosophy and nutrition at various universities and institutions in Melbourne, Australia. Nicole is the author of the bestseller - Healthy Home Healthy Family - which attracted numerous radio and television interviews in addition to numerous articles in print and online media and has published papers in peer reviewed scientific journals. She lectures extensively at medical conferences both in Australia and internationally and is regularly consulted by the media for her opinion on chemicals and electromagnetic fields. She is currently undertaking her PhD in environmental chemical exposures.
