The
Diploma of Building Biology (30588QLD) is an 18 month full time or three
year part time course. It is the first and only government accredited
course of its kind in Australia. Designed to produce competent Building
Biologists at the highest level, the course provides a detailed understanding
of the health hazards in and around the built environment. Students
will learn how to conduct indoor air quality audits, electromagnetic
field audits, geomancy audits, and the ability to assess the energy
efficiency of a building. Building material selection and design will
also enable students to work alongside builders and architects to construct
dwellings that are not only energy efficient, but support the health
and wellbeing of the occupants who live within them. Utilising occupational hygiene techniques, students will be able to carry out
particulate and chemical sampling. The course strongly
focuses on ways to reduce and, where possible, mitigate the health hazards
to provide clients with a cost effective way to reduce their exposure.
In order to qualify for the Diploma of Building Biology, correspondence
students must attend a 9 day practical in Melbourne (January 2010 and
then again in January 2011) to fulfill the practical component of the
course. Graduates of this course are eligible to join the Australasian
Society of Building Biologists at the highest level. As a Recognised
Training Organisation, Austudy is available to eligible students (apply
through Centrelink). NOTE: as from 2010, the Building Biology course will only be offered as a correspondence course with a 9 day intensive.
