ABOUT THE FOUNDER

As a small child the founder, Nicole Bijlsma, was drawn towards all things environmental. Her mother retells stories of a young Nicole covering her face with a tea towel as an act of defiance against the air pollution in the city of Melbourne. Perhaps the defining moment however and ultimate inspiration for the college came from the pages of a children's book - Dr Seuss fortelling of a world devoid of trees due to human greed. The seed was sown and later in life Nicole continued her passion for the environment and its impact on human health first graduating as a naturopath, then acupuncture (including formal training in China), feng shui and ultimately building biology.
Nicole is a woman of passion and her passion lies in environmental medicine. She first became involved in feng shui as a result of two events in her life; firstly when she and her husband experienced significant financial difficulties as well as infertility after moving into their first home (only to realise every other family who had lived there had experienced the same). And secondly, when she began to notice the extent to which the environment was causing illness in many of her patients. Nicole is an accomplished naturopath, building biologist, feng shui consultant and university lecturer. Apart from an Honours degree in Acupuncture, she completed further training in Guangzhou TCM hospital (China) in 1992. Furthermore she has taught Traditional Chinese Medicine and Naturopathic philosophy at various universities and institutions at tertiary level for the past 15 years.

FENG SHUI COURSE

The college was established in 1999 by its founder - Nicole Bijlsma - as a result of a need to provide comprehensive training in the field of Feng Shui. At the time, books and courses taught contradictory information which further confused the public. Furthermore many of the courses were short in duration, had poor quality notes and lacked any practical training. As a tertiary lecturer with a solid foundation in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and given that Feng Shui is one of the eight limbs of TCM, Nicole was able to provide a depth of understanding of Feng Shui theory not generally found in other courses. In order to provide a solid foundation in Feng Shui, experts in various fields were sought including geomancy, space clearing and feng shui to ensure that our students gained various perspectives.
The college currently employs over 20 staff members all with varying backgrounds and expertise. They have all been personally selected not only for their knowledge and skills, but also for their ability to teach (as an accredited college all our lecturers must have a teaching qualification). .

BUILDING BIOLOGY COURSE

During her 15 years in clinical practise as a natural therapist and acupuncturist, Nicole began to notice a connection between her patients with asthma, insomnia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and some forms of cancer with their homes. Upon auditing their homes, the connection became obvious with mould, high magnetic fields and particulates common causative factors. Sick building syndrome as it is now known, is a global problem costing most western countries billions of dollars annually. Building Biology is the study identifying and alleviating the causes of Sick Building Syndrome. Nicole studied the concept of building biology both in Australia and abroad. Disappointed with the lack of quality and relevant information to Australian needs, Nicole along with several other experts in the fields of electrical engineering, occupational hygiene, renewable energy and so forth, devoted the next 5 years of researching and developing what is now arguably the most comprehensive undergraduate building biology course in the world.
