Can I do the entire course online?

The Electricity Fundamentals subject is completed online and is a prerequisite to enrol in the Electrobiology subject. Online subjects can be started at any time of the year. Due to the practical nature of the Electrobiology and Geobiology subjects, these subjects can only be completed on campus (Melbourne).

What support will I receive during my training?

You will have access to a tutor for the duration of the subject and should set aside around ten hours of homework per week in order to complete the subject within a 12 week timeframe. This is largely self directed - you will initiate contact as the need arises although our staff will check in from time to time. Some students choose to contact their tutor on a regular basis, whilst other students only make contact when they submit their assessments.

Are there any prerequisites to do the course?

You are required to be at least 18 years of age to study our courses. Apart from that, there are no prerequisites and we assume no previous knowledge in any field.

Can I do a subject out of interest?

Yes you can, however if you don't complete the assessments, then a Certificate and Academic Record will not be provided.

Do I need to buy equipment or books?

Comprehensive manuals, videos of the lectures and access to peer-reviewed scientific papers and reports will be provided. You will be required to buy the 'Electrical Principles' book (Peter Philips), and the 'Healthy Home Healthy Family' book (Nicole Bijlsma) which can be purchased through the college. Equipment will be provided for you to use during the workshops.

How much homework is involved?

For each subject, students should set aside around ten hours of homework every week to complete each subject within the 12 week time frame. Please take this into consideration when enrolling.

I have not studied for many years. Will I be able to cope?

We attract mature age students many of whom have not studied for many years, or even decades. We have addressed this issue by providing you with a student handbook and videos on How to Reference and How to Research. Writing essays and referencing can be challenging the first time round, so students are encouraged to discuss any concerns with their lecturer or tutor. Remember we are here to help you succeed!

Do I need computer skills?

This training is partly delivered online so you will need a computer to be able to access the course materials, write your assessments and upload them online. If you are not familiar with how to use a computer, we suggest you do a course at a Tafe or Neighbourhood house before you enrol in the course.

Can I apply for credits for prior learning?

Students who have a background as an electrician, electrical subcontractor or electrical engineer may want to apply for an exemption from the Electricity Fundamentals subject. Contact administration for an RPL form and send it along with your documentation (certified copies of your qualifications and licenses) along with a $250 fee. This is non-refundable regardless of the outcome.
